About this position

Postdoctoral Research Associate opportunity in Hydrogen-Resistant Steels for Sustainable Energy at The University of Manchester.

This 24-month fixed-term PDRA position sits in the Department of Materials and focuses on developing next-generation steels with enhanced hydrogen tolerance for safe hydrogen transmission and storage infrastructure. The project is highly relevant to the UK’s transition to a hydrogen-based net-zero energy system.

Research themes include hydrogen embrittlement in steels, advanced alloy design, microstructural engineering, microstructure-property relationships, alloy processing and manufacturing, mechanical testing in hydrogen-related environments, and state-of-the-art materials characterisation such as SEM, EBSD, and TEM.

The successful candidate will work in a collaborative environment with partners including the University of Oxford, University of Sheffield, Tata Steel, and National Gas.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold or be close to completing a PhD in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline. Experience in advanced microstructural characterisation is expected, and strong publication potential is desirable. The post is especially suitable for candidates interested in sustainable energy materials, metallurgy, and hydrogen infrastructure technologies.

Funding: salaried postdoctoral employment at £32,080–£45,163 per annum (Grade 5/6).

Deadline: 31 July 2026.

How to apply: submit an application via the provided University of Manchester job link. Informal enquiries can be directed to Dr Peng Gong at [email protected].
