About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Trento (DICAM) in Italy on advanced atmospheric modelling, turbulent dispersion, chemical reactivity, Large Eddy Simulation, Lagrangian models, and AI-driven prediction.
The project is titled Advanced Lagrangian Modelling of Reactive Atmospheric Plumes from CO2 Capture: Development, Validation, and AI-Accelerated Prediction. It focuses on emissions from CO2 capture technologies, especially the atmospheric formation, transport, mixing, deposition, and chemical transformation of compounds such as nitrosamines and nitramines.
The PhD is based in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering (DICAM) at the University of Trento, with approximately 6 months of research stay at NILU, Kjeller, Norway. The work combines physics-based numerical simulations, field measurements, and machine-learning surrogate models. The project is part of the FuNitr collaboration and includes validation against unique airborne measurement campaigns and high-resolution CFD/LES benchmarks.
Funding: fully funded. Approximate net salary is 1600 euro/month, with a 50% increase during research stays abroad.
Eligibility highlights: background in physics, applied mathematics, environmental/atmospheric sciences, or mechanical/environmental/chemical engineering; strong knowledge of fluid dynamics, numerical methods, and programming (Fortran and Python are especially relevant); experience with atmospheric modelling or CFD is an advantage.
Deadline: 2026-08-24 at 16:00 Italian time. International applications are welcome.
How to apply: read the official call and submit through the University of Trento PhD application portal. The specific opening is position C2 under Curriculum C: Modelling and Simulation. For questions, contact Prof. Massimo Cassiani at [email protected].
