About this position

NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD position in advanced testing, modelling, and simulation of composite materials under high-velocity impact at the Department of Structural Engineering in Trondheim, Norway.

The project is based in SIMLab and focuses on computational mechanics, experimental mechanics, protective structures, solid mechanics, and composite materials. The research aims to develop next-generation composite armour materials for personal protection against ballistic and fragmentation threats, using high-speed diagnostics, experimental testing, and advanced numerical simulations.

The successful candidate will investigate penetration, damage evolution, energy absorption, and lightweight material configurations for improved ballistic performance. The project also explores coupling structural impact simulations with biomechanical surrogate models to assess injury risk from blunt-force trauma.

The PhD student will work with industrial and research partners including NFM Group, FFI, IMPETUS, Avient, Forsvarsbygg, and St. Olavs Hospital. The position is supervised in the broader sense by Professor Tore Børvik and Associate Professor David Morin, with Tore Børvik listed as the immediate leader and group leader of SIMLab.

Eligibility highlights: a relevant Master's degree in structural engineering, mechanical engineering, computational mechanics, or equivalent; a major independent project of at least 30 ECTS; strong academic results (B or better on NTNU's scale); and good English communication skills. Preferred experience includes non-linear finite element analysis, optical measurements, composite modelling, programming, fluid mechanics, and biomechanics.

Funding and terms: this is a salaried PhD candidate position at NTNU, normally paid NOK 580,000 gross per year depending on qualifications and seniority. The appointment is for 3 years.

Application deadline: 11 October 2026. Applications must be submitted electronically via Jobbnorge.no with transcripts, diplomas, CV, a short motivation/research statement, selected academic works, and three referees.

What's required

Relevant Master's degree in structural engineering, mechanical engineering, computational mechanics, or equivalent, including a major independent project of at least 30 ECTS equivalent to a master's thesis. Applicants must have a strong academic background with an average grade of B or better on NTNU's scale, or an equally strong foundation if grades are not letter-based. Master students may apply only if the degree is completed and documented before starting and no later than 2026-11-01. Good oral and written English skills are required. Preferred experience includes solid mechanics, non-linear finite element analysis, optical measurements, composite material modelling, programming (Python, Fortran, CUDA or similar), fluid mechanics, and biomechanics.

How to apply

Apply electronically via Jobbnorge.no. Include transcripts and diplomas for Bachelor's and Master's degrees, CV, a 1-page research interest/motivation statement, academic works you want considered, and contact information for three referees. If applicable, also attach documentation of foreign education and diploma supplements.
