About this position

Oslo University Hospital is offering a PhD Fellowship in biomedical engineering focused on improving the echocardiographic assessment of aortic valve disease using experimental and computational haemodynamics. The project is part of CDTnet and is funded through the EU Horizon Europe MSCA programme.

The project addresses a major clinical challenge in the evaluation of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and aortic valve disease. Current echocardiographic methods often rely on simplified assumptions about valve geometry and blood flow. This PhD will develop patient-specific experimental models and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) frameworks to better understand pressure gradients, pressure recovery, valve severity, and the limitations of standard Bernoulli-based approaches.

The doctoral candidate will work on 3D-printed diseased aortic valve models, a laboratory mock circulation system, high-fidelity pressure and flow measurements, and validation studies comparing experimental measurements with echocardiographic data. The project will also explore emerging ultrasound methods such as blood speckle tracking (BST) and use fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulations where appropriate.

The candidate will be integrated into a multidisciplinary environment involving cardiologists, clinical researchers, and engineering specialists. The project offers access to one of Europe’s largest TAVI programmes, extensive datasets, and international secondments at King’s College London, Ghent University, and FEops for training in cardiovascular flow phantoms, advanced haemodynamic measurement, CFD, and commercial modelling applications.

This is a full-time temporary PhD position with an expected start date of 1 December 2026. The application deadline is 30 September 2026. Applicants should have a relevant Master’s degree, a strong academic record, and preferably experience in CFD, FSI, programming, fluid mechanics, experimental modelling, CAD, or additive manufacturing. Excellent English skills and the ability to work independently and in an international team are required.

The post is based in Oslo, Norway, at Oslo University Hospital / The Intervention Centre. Applicants must also satisfy the MSCA mobility rule and must not already hold a doctoral degree.

Applicants must hold a Master's degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Medical Technology, Engineering Cybernetics, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Informatics, or a related discipline. A strong academic record is required, corresponding to a weighted average grade of B or higher. Experience with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is highly desirable; fluid-structure interaction (FSI) modelling is an additional advantage. Scientific programming skills (e.g. Python, MATLAB, C++ or similar) are advantageous. Knowledge of fluid mechanics, computational mechanics, mathematical modelling, numerical methods, or medical image analysis is considered an advantage. Experience with experimental fluid mechanics, laboratory instrumentation, physical modelling, sensor technology, experimental validation, 3D modelling, CAD, or additive manufacturing is beneficial. Previous research experience, publications, presentations, or project participation are advantageous. Interest in cardiovascular physiology, echocardiography, heart valve disease, medical technology, or computational medicine is desirable. Excellent written and oral English skills are required. Applicants must not have lived or worked in Norway for more than 12 months in the 3 years before recruitment, must not already hold a doctoral degree, and must be eligible to enrol in the PhD programme at the University of Oslo.
