About this position
NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD Candidate position in AI-Augmented Urban Sensing and Societal Readiness for Climate-Responsive Regeneration at the Department of Architecture and Planning in Trondheim, Norway.
The project sits at the intersection of architecture, urban planning, urban regeneration, climate adaptation, environmental sensing, AI/machine learning, GIS, spatial analysis, and participatory/co-design methods. The research aims to develop and test a societal readiness framework and a co-design workflow that translate AI-augmented urban data into legitimate, inclusive, and climate-responsive regeneration decisions. A primary living lab, preferably in a Nordic case study, will be used to test the workflow.
This is a salaried PhD employment at NTNU, normally with a gross annual salary of NOK 550,800 depending on qualifications and seniority. The appointment period is 3 years. The post also mentions working capital for the project and standard NTNU employee benefits.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a relevant Master’s degree in Architecture and Urban Planning, or a related field with a strong focus on urban applications of advanced digital tools and AI. The degree must be completed before starting and no later than 2026-09-01. A strong academic record is required, along with excellent English; Norwegian/Scandinavian at B1 level is preferred. Experience with GIS, environmental sensing/IoT, data analysis, AI or machine learning, simulation, environmental-performance modelling, and participatory design is an advantage.
