About this position
NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a fully funded 4-year PhD position in Creating Inclusive Climate Risk Scenarios in Urban Planning using AI. The project sits at the intersection of urban planning, architecture, GIS, spatial data analysis, machine learning, generative AI, extended reality (XR), and social justice / intersectionality.
The PhD is hosted by the Department of Architecture and Planning at NTNU in Trondheim, in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science and external partners in Norwegian municipalities. The research focuses on how emerging technologies can support societal preparedness planning for climate risks, while integrating “thick description” of vulnerability with quantitative climate-risk data. The role is anchored in the CREST-GLOBAL research team and linked to the Software Engineering group.
Funding: fully funded position, 4 years total, with a gross salary of NOK 550,800 per year depending on qualifications and seniority. The appointment includes 3 years of doctoral work and 1 year of career-promoting/departmental duties. Working capital is also provided.
Eligibility highlights: a relevant master’s degree in urban planning or architecture is required; related fields may be considered. Applicants must have strong academic results (B or better on NTNU’s scale or equivalent), meet admission requirements for the PhD programme in Architecture, and have excellent English. Preferred experience includes GIS, spatial and mixed-method data analysis, AI-based modelling, urban analytics/informatics, social justice frameworks, GDPR, and the EU AI Act. Norwegian language skills are preferred.
