About this position

PhD opportunity at Lund University in AI-based design of twisted hybrid nanowires and protein–mineral hybrid materials.

The position is hosted in the Saragovi group at CMPS, Kemicentrum, Lund University. The project combines computational protein design and experimental biochemistry/materials characterization to create protein assemblies with precisely defined geometric voids that direct mineral growth for next-generation sustainable (opto)electronic technologies.

You will work on deep learning and reinforcement learning-based protein design workflows, sequence design and structure prediction evaluation, and high-throughput experimental validation using protein expression, purification, and functional assays. The lab emphasizes interdisciplinary research across computational biology, protein engineering, biochemistry, and materials science, with access to advanced instrumentation and a Linux-based GPU cluster.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree or equivalent in Molecular Biotechnology, Synthetic Biology, Bioinformatics, Protein Design, or a closely related field; strong Linux/Python computational skills; experience with RFdiffusion, ProteinMPNN, AlphaFold or similar tools; molecular biology and protein biochemistry experience; excellent English and strong collaboration skills.

Funding/employment: full-time doctoral employment for 4 years at Lund University, with possible extension for teaching/departmental duties. Monthly salary and standard university employment benefits are offered.

Deadline: 2026-09-01. Applications must be submitted in English via the Varbi portal and include a CV, cover letter, degree/study certificates, and any additional supporting documents.
