About this position

University of Oslo (UiO), Faculty of Dentistry, is offering a PhD position in AI-driven multimodal analysis and predictive modelling of biomaterials. The project is based in the Biomaterial Science (BIOMAT) group / Institute of Clinical Dentistry and focuses on linking structural, mechanical, and biological properties to biomaterial performance and tissue reconstruction.

The research combines 2D and 3D bioimaging (micro/nanoCT, confocal microscopy, SEM) with computer vision, image analysis, and machine learning. The PhD candidate will work with multimodal datasets from biological tissues and engineered biomaterials and contribute to quantitative analysis of tissues, scaffold characterization, standardization of biomedical imaging data, and AI-based prediction of cell and exosome distribution in regenerative biomaterials.

This is a fully funded 3-year PhD fellowship with salary in the range of NOK 551,000–605,000 depending on competence and experience. The position is located in Oslo, Norway, and the work will primarily be carried out at the Oral Research Laboratory, which provides infrastructure for biomaterial production and characterization, cell culture, SEM, confocal microscopy, micro/nanoCT, and histology.

Eligibility highlights: MSc and BSc in Biomaterials, Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Biology, Computer Science, Medical Technology, or a closely related field; relevant experience in biomedical imaging, quantitative data analysis, image processing, machine learning, or biomaterials; strong interest in interdisciplinary research; fluent English. Helpful extras include Python, computer vision, machine learning, and experience with 2D/3D biomedical imaging or tissue engineering.

Deadline: 20 October 2026. How to apply: submit a cover letter, CV, diplomas/transcripts, English proficiency documentation if required, publication list if applicable, and reference contacts through UiO’s Jobbnorge recruitment portal. The main supervisor is Associate Professor Athina Samara.
