About this position

PhD opportunity in Automatic Control with focus on Datacenter Control at Lund University, Sweden. This doctoral position is part of the EU-funded AEGIS — Adaptive Grid-Interactive Edge Datacenter Fleets Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action (MSCA) research and training network, which trains 15 PhD students from 2026 to 2030.

The project sits at the intersection of automatic control, datacenters, AI infrastructure, energy systems, and power/thermal control. The research aims to build a control layer that translates high-level intents such as carbon, flexibility, and cost into coordinated actions across site assets including cooling, batteries, and compute hardware. Methods mentioned include classical control, AI, and reinforcement learning, with online tuning of power-performance and thermal models.

What you will work on: designing an intent language; breaking high-level intents into control actions; tuning models online; developing control software with measured latency; building practical control systems using real-world experimental data; and creating telemetry that reports headroom while respecting service-level limits.

Eligibility and requirements: applicants must meet general third-cycle admission requirements and have an MSc in engineering or equivalent, plus knowledge corresponding to Automatic Control basic course and a relevant second-cycle specialization. Strong English skills, strong mathematical background, curiosity, creativity, teamwork, independence, and communication skills are required. Helpful experience includes machine learning/reinforcement learning, cloud computing, low-level programming, and Linux kernel work. MSCA mobility rules apply: applicants must not have lived, studied, or worked in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment, and must not already hold a PhD.

Funding and employment: the position is a full-time doctoral employment at Lund University with a competitive monthly salary of 35,900 SEK and yearly raise. The appointment is fixed-term for 4 years, with extension possible for teaching and departmental duties. The project includes two 3-month visits to partners at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland) and Elisa (Finland).

Application: submit an English application including a CV, cover letter, degree/study certificates, and any additional supporting documents such as transcripts, references, or recommendation letters. Deadline: 23 October 2026.
