About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of East Anglia in collaboration with the JIC/Le lab, focused on bacteriology, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, ecology, and marine biology.

The project investigates how bacterial hosts control domesticated viral machines called gene transfer agents (GTAs) to drive horizontal gene transfer in marine environments. The work centers on Ruegeria pomeroyi DSS-3 and marine Roseobacter communities, asking how GTA production is regulated, what ecological signals trigger it, and how abundant/expression-diverse GTAs are in marine metagenomic and metatranscriptomic datasets.

Training includes bacterial genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, genomics methods such as ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, and Tn-seq, plus live-cell imaging. Complementary expertise is provided by the Todd lab in marine microbial ecology, metagenomic sampling, and bioinformatics, with additional mentoring from JIC, Quadram Institute, and UEA scientists.

This is a competition funded PhD project open to students worldwide. Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a first degree in biology, microbiology, or a related discipline, and at least a UK-equivalent 2:1 Bachelors (Honours). English language requirement stated: IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each category.

Study location: Norwich, United Kingdom. Start date: 1 October 2027. Apply by registering interest on the project page; the university will respond directly.
