About this position

Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is recruiting a full-time PhD candidate for an interdisciplinary project on bio-cemented mycelium composites in architectural engineering and microbiology.

The project focuses on sustainable, circular, bio-based construction materials. You will investigate how microbial mineralisation can improve the mechanical properties of mycelium-based composites by forming calcium-based crystals within or on the mycelium network. The work combines microbiological experimentation, material production, chemical and microscopic characterisation, and mechanical testing.

You will work with the VUB research team at the interface of the Architectural Engineering Research Group and the Research Group of Microbiology in the Department of Bioengineering Sciences. The role also includes limited teaching support in the Architectural Engineering department.

Eligibility highlights include a master’s degree in biotechnology, bioengineering sciences, materials science, architectural engineering, chemical engineering, or a related field; practical lab skills; basic microbiology/fungal cultivation experience; strong analytical ability; and good English communication skills. Experience with mycelium-based composites, microbially induced calcite precipitation, SEM-EDX, FTIR, microscopy, mechanical testing, statistical analysis, 3D printing, mould development, or prototyping is an asset.

The position is based at the Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus (Elsene), Belgium. It is a full-time PhD scholarship for 12 months, extendable up to 48 months subject to positive evaluation, with a grant linked to a government scale.

Apply via the VUB jobs portal by 31 August 2026. Submit your CV, motivation letter, and diploma. Questions about the vacancy can be directed to Lars De Laet at [email protected].
