About this position

PhD position in biomass resources from sustainable cropping systems at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Department of Biosystems and Technology, based at Alnarp, Sweden.

The doctoral project focuses on using agricultural crop biomass for biogas in synergy with sustainable cropping systems. The research will examine crop yields, crop nutrient dynamics, biomass removal scenarios, nutrient redistribution via digestates, and the balance between energy, nutrients, food provisioning, profitability, and environmental impact.

The project is embedded in the Biogas Solutions Research Center (BSRC), a national transdisciplinary center involving SLU, Linköping University, industry, public organizations, and support from the Swedish Energy Agency. The work is interdisciplinary and connects agriculture, bioenergy, systems analysis, and sustainability assessment.

Research tasks include literature review, analysis of long-term cropping systems experiments, sample collection and analyses, scenario development, and calculation of energy and nutrient balances at cropping-system level. Biomass resources may include cover crops, ley, straw, beet leaves, and possibly wood.

Eligibility: a Master’s degree or equivalent in agricultural science, agronomy, agroecology, agricultural engineering, biology, environmental science, horticultural science, or a closely related field; at least 240 credits with 60 second-cycle credits; for agricultural science, at least 90 relevant credits including a degree project and 30 advanced-level credits; English proficiency equivalent to Engelska B/6. Relevant experience in cropping systems, modelling, sustainability assessment, nutrient cycling, or statistical analysis is highly valued.

Funding: employment as a doctoral student for 4 years, with salary according to local collective agreement and fixed salary progression.

Deadline: 27 November 2026. The position is full-time and starts upon agreement, preferably in January/February 2027.
