About this position

Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is advertising a PhD student position in agricultural bioeconomy systems at the Department of Biosystems and Technology, based at Alnarp, Sweden. The doctoral project is titled Sustainable utilisation of agricultural green biomass in integrated protein and biogas systems.

The project sits at the intersection of agriculture, environmental science, bioenergy, biogas, biorefinery systems, GIS, systems analysis, scenario modelling, and sustainability assessment. It aims to evaluate the large-scale use of green crop residues and intermediate crops in integrated biogas and green biorefinery systems, including impacts on nutrient cycling, soil carbon, biomethane, fertilizer use, feed and food production, and broader socio-economic trade-offs.

The work includes collecting and processing agricultural and process data, GIS analysis, modelling biomass and product flows, scenario development, and environmental/economic assessments. The doctoral student will work in an interdisciplinary environment at SLU Alnarp and within the Biogas Solutions Research Center (BSRC), collaborating with researchers and external partners.

Funding: employment as a doctoral student for a 4-year programme; salary follows the local collective agreement and salary progression is fixed.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree or equivalent is required, with specific third-cycle technology requirements including relevant advanced credits and a degree project. Strong English is required; Swedish is helpful but not mandatory. Preferred backgrounds include biosystems/agricultural engineering, environmental engineering, agricultural science, energy systems, industrial ecology, or environmental science. Experience with modelling, GIS, life cycle assessment, techno-economic assessment, statistics, and programming (Python, R, MATLAB) is desirable.

Deadline: 27 November 2026. Apply via the SLU recruitment portal and follow the doctoral application instructions linked in the posting.
