About this position
Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is advertising a PhD position in biomass resources from sustainable cropping systems at the Department of Biosystems and Technology, based at Alnarp, Sweden.
The project focuses on using agricultural crop biomass for biogas in synergy with the development of sustainable cropping systems. Research topics include agricultural science, cropping systems, bioenergy, nutrient cycling, crop and soil nutrient dynamics, systems analysis, and scenario analysis. The work will use an ongoing long-term field experiment with conventional, organic, agroforestry, and perennial cereal systems, and will examine biomass removal, nutrient redistribution via digestates, energy balances, nutrient balances, and food provisioning at cropping-system level.
The doctoral student will be part of the Biogas Solutions Research Center (BSRC), a national transdisciplinary center involving SLU, Linköping University, industry, public organizations, and support from the Swedish Energy Agency.
Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as agricultural engineering, agricultural science, agroecology, agronomy, biology, environmental science, or horticultural science; at least 90 credits in relevant subject areas for agricultural science; a degree project and at least 30 credits at advanced level; and English proficiency equivalent to Engelska B/6. Strong analytical skills, ability to work independently, and interest in interdisciplinary collaboration are emphasized.
Funding: employment as a doctoral student for 4 years, with salary according to local collective agreement and fixed salary progression.
Deadline: 27 November 2026. Apply via the online application portal and follow the SLU doctoral application instructions for required attachments.
