About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Leeds in the School of Earth & Environment on climate extremes, infrastructure risk, and urban resilience.
This project sits within the UNRISK CDT and focuses on how heat and rainfall hazards, climate uncertainty, cascading risks, and urban system dynamics interact to shape risk in the built environment and critical infrastructure. The research will combine climate science, environmental science, civil engineering, urban geography, human geography, data science, and mathematical modelling to build a novel framework for probabilistic hazard modelling and valuation of impact chains.
The successful candidate will examine how uncertainties propagate across climate, urban systems, and valuation methods; improve evidence for decision-makers; and support climate risk management and adaptation planning. The project also connects with local authorities, infrastructure owners, the Met Office, and the UK Climate Change Commission.
Funding: fully funded NERC studentship via UNRISK CDT, including full tuition fees, a UKRI-rate stipend, research and training costs, cohort training support, and a flexible fund. International applicants are welcome, though visa and health surcharge costs may apply and awards are limited by UKRI rules.
Eligibility: first-class or high 2:1 degree in a quantitative discipline such as Climate Science, Environmental Science, Geography, Engineering, Physics, or Applied Mathematics; a relevant MSc is preferred; coding ability and some climate/weather or engineering knowledge are desirable.
Location: Leeds, United Kingdom.
Application: see the UNRISK website and contact the lead supervisor with questions.
