About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Leeds in the School of Earth & Environment on Greenland ice-sheet stability, climate science, data analysis, data science, mathematical modelling, and palaeoclimate evidence.

The project asks whether Greenland may reach a tipping point and how ice-age evidence can improve predictions of its future. It uses the coupled climate–ice sheet model FAMOUS-ice to study past, present, and future Greenland stability, including irreversible retreat, uncertainty in sea-level projections, and long-term societal risks from sea-level rise.

The student will work on improving model resolution, applying downscaling methods for precipitation over ice sheets, and running large ensembles of simulations. The work combines modern Greenland observations with geological evidence from the last Ice Age and deglaciation, including data from western Canada, to eliminate model configurations inconsistent with evidence and estimate probabilistic future outcomes.

Eligibility: suitable for students with backgrounds in Physics, Mathematics, Oceanography, Meteorology, Climate Sciences, Natural Sciences, or Earth/Environmental/Geographical Sciences. Programming or numerical modelling experience in Python, Fortran, C++, MATLAB, or R is highly desirable.

Funding: fully funded NERC studentship through the UNRISK CDT, including full tuition fees, UKRI-rate stipend, research and training costs, and cohort training support. Applications are open to UK and international applicants, though international awards are limited by UKRI rules.

Deadline: 2027-01-13.
