About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Leeds in the School of Earth & Environment with Dr Ruza Ivanovic.

This project, “Changing climates: Unlocking the past to improve predictions of the future,” sits at the intersection of climate science, data analysis, data science, mathematical modelling, statistics, and Earth science. The research aims to improve estimates of equilibrium climate sensitivity (ECS) by combining observational records from Earth’s past with advanced uncertainty quantification, machine learning, data assimilation, Kalman filtering, and forward modelling.

The project will use ensembles of simulations from state-of-the-art climate models and paleoclimate evidence from periods such as the Last Glacial Maximum and the Pliocene. It will develop physically consistent, observation-constrained sea surface temperature and sea-ice maps and then use them to drive simulations with the UK Met Office’s HadGEM3-GC5c model. The work is designed to answer important questions about climate feedbacks, uncertainty sources, and the upper range of future warming.

Applicants should have a background in Physics, Mathematics, Oceanography, Meteorology, Climate Sciences, Natural Sciences, Earth/Environmental/Geographical Sciences, or Data Science. Programming or numerical modelling experience in Python, Fortran, C++, MATLAB, or R is highly desirable.

This is a fully funded NERC studentship within the UNRISK CDT. Funding includes full tuition fees, a UKRI-rate stipend, research and training costs, cohort training support, and a flexible fund. Applications are open to UK and international applicants, although international awards are limited and overseas applicants must cover visa and health surcharge costs.

The post is based in Leeds, United Kingdom.
