About this position

PhD position at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Mobility in eXtended Reality Lab, Department of Transport & Planning, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences.

The project focuses on eXtended Reality (XR), Virtual Reality (VR), automated vehicles, inclusive mobility, and human-machine interfaces. The research aims to understand how automated vehicles interact with vulnerable road users, including people with disabilities, and how external HMIs can support safer and more equitable interactions.

You will develop a theoretical framework for AV–VRU interactions, design accessible VR simulators, run VR experiments, analyze behavioral/cognitive/psychological/physiological decision-making processes, and conduct real-world testing of inclusive eHMI designs. The role also involves collaboration with other PhD researchers, publishing in scientific journals, and presenting at conferences and stakeholder workshops.

Requirements include a relevant master’s degree (for example in Human-Computer Interaction, Transportation, or Computer Science), strong VR/XR development skills (Unity/Unreal), experimental design and data collection experience, programming ability (Python/C#), statistics, and strong qualitative and quantitative analysis skills. Good English writing and communication are required.

The position is a 4-year doctoral employment at TU Delft, with salary from €3059 to €3881 gross per month plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also mentions health insurance discounts and a work costs contribution.

Application deadline: 30 August 2026. Apply online and upload a motivation letter, CV, writing sample, and academic transcripts. Contact: Dr. Yan Feng ([email protected]).
