About this position

PhD opportunity in DNA replication origins, genome language models, and synthetic biology at the Earlham Institute, Norwich, United Kingdom.

This interdisciplinary project explores how DNA replication origins are encoded and regulated in genomes, and how artificial intelligence can be used to design new genetic elements that control replication. The work combines computational biology, genomics, synthetic biology, machine learning, genome engineering, CRISPR-based genome editing, next-generation sequencing, nanopore sequencing, and data analysis.

You will work with expertise from the Li, Hall, Grandellis, and Nieduszynski groups and train in developing predictive models of replication origin function, designing synthetic DNA sequences, and testing them in yeast. The project is hosted at the Earlham Institute, a BBSRC research centre focused on genomics, engineering, computational biology, and AI, with access to the Earlham Biofoundry and advanced genomics platforms.

The studentship is part of the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership and is fully funded for 4 years. Funding includes tuition fees, a living stipend, and a Research Training Support Grant. The programme also includes a three-month professional internship placement (PIPS) and broader training and career development opportunities.

Eligibility highlights include at least a UK-equivalent 2:1 Bachelors (Honours) degree and English language proficiency at IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each category. The opportunity is open to students worldwide. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed on 2, 3, and 4 February 2027.

For full eligibility and application guidance, visit the NRPDTP website and use the required Personal and Research statement templates.
