About this position
PhD opportunity at the Earlham Institute in Norwich, United Kingdom, focused on engineering fitness in disease-resistant crops. This project sits at the intersection of agriculture, biology, genetics, genomics, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and genetic engineering, with a strong emphasis on engineering biology and laboratory automation.
The research addresses a major challenge in crop improvement: disease resistance can protect plants but sometimes reduces growth and yield. The project will investigate whether programmable, tissue- and time-specific expression of resistance genes can preserve resistance while reducing growth-defence trade-offs. The biological system includes potato cyst nematodes and the soybean resistance locus Rhg1.
You will work with world-class automation robotics in the Earlham Biofoundry, building and testing a regulatory-part library, redesigning Rhg1 constructs, and evaluating engineered plants for disease resistance, root architecture, and tuber yield. The project is highly collaborative and involves the Grandellis Group at Earlham Institute and the Witek Group at 2Blades.
Training includes plant molecular biology, synthetic and engineering biology, automated DNA assembly, biofoundry technologies, and genetic engineering. The programme is part of the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership, which offers a fully funded 4-year PhD studentship and a three-month professional internship placement (PIPS).
Eligibility highlights: at least a UK-equivalent Bachelor’s (Honours) 2:1 and IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each category. The project is full-time and open to students worldwide. The application process requires the NRPDTP website and the programme’s bespoke personal and research statement templates.
Application note: this project has been shortlisted for funding by the NRPDTP. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed on 2, 3, and 4 February 2027. The project start date is 1 October 2027.
