PhD opportunity in multi-scale modeling of biomolecular phase transitions at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Germany.
The newly established Phase Transition Engineering group led by Dr. Leif-Thore Deck is seeking a PhD student to work on the theoretical and numerical study of biomolecular phase behavior. The project focuses on liquid-liquid phase separation, thermodynamics, kinetics (including nucleation and growth), and process modeling of biomolecular solid formation.
The research connects fundamental questions in the physical sciences with applications in biopharmaceutical manufacturing and biomedical research, including the behavior of disease-relevant proteins such as alpha-synuclein and tau. The work will combine analytical theory, numerical simulation tools, and experimental validation using data from parallel projects.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree in engineering or natural sciences, preferably in chemical engineering, bioengineering, process engineering, physics, or chemistry. Strong interest in theoretical and numerical work, good communication skills, teamwork, very good English, and sufficient German are expected; mathematical modeling experience is an advantage.
