About this position

PhD opportunity at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg, Germany, in the newly established research group Phase Transition Engineering led by Dr. Leif-Thore Deck.

The project focuses on quantifying the thermodynamics of biomolecules using droplet microfluidics, with emphasis on biomolecular phase transitions such as liquid-liquid phase separation, aggregation, precipitation, crystallization, nucleation, growth, and dissolution. The research will develop and characterize droplet microfluidic methods for studying peptides, nucleic acids, and (dis)ordered proteins, with applications in biopharmaceutical formulation and manufacturing as well as disease-relevant protein condensates and aggregates.

This is a PhD Student (f/m/d) position, full-time and fixed-term for three years, with the option of extension. The institute offers an international, interdisciplinary, collaborative, and dynamic working environment with flexible working hours and modern working conditions.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a Master's degree in engineering or natural sciences, preferably chemical, bio, or process engineering, physics, chemistry, or a related field, with above-average grades. Strong experimental interest, communication skills, teamwork, very good English, and sufficient German are required; experience in chemical laboratory work, optics, and microfluidics is advantageous.

Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis until the position is filled. Apply through the online application portal and submit a motivation letter, CV, certificates, and reference letters.
