About this position

PhD opportunity in DNA/RNA nanostructure therapies at Karolinska Institutet, Sweden. The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology is recruiting a doctoral student to work in Erik Benson’s research group at SciLifeLab Campus Solna.

The project focuses on selection of DNA/RNA nanostructures as novel therapies, with an emphasis on developing targeted nucleic acid therapeutics for cancer. The work combines molecular biology, nanomedicine, DNA nanostructure design and assembly, DNA–protein conjugation, cell culture, high-throughput sequencing, and bioinformatics. The student will design and run experiments, analyze data, and interpret results in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment.

Eligibility highlights: a master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as molecular biology, biotechnology, biochemistry, nanotechnology, biomedicine, chemistry, or related disciplines; strong English proficiency; wet-lab experience in molecular biology techniques such as PCR and nucleic acid handling; and computational data analysis skills, for example in Python. Experience with mammalian cell culture, sequencing, bioconjugation, purification, RNA work, and microscopy is considered meritorious.

Funding and terms: this is a doctoral studentship with a contractual monthly salary, full-time for up to 4 years. Karolinska Institutet also notes access to a free gym and reimbursement for medical care.

Application window: published 10 July 2026; last application date 5 August 2026. Apply via the Varbi recruitment system and include a personal letter, CV, degree projects/publications if any, supporting documents, and proof of eligibility.
