About this position

PhD opportunity at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), Germany

The Institute of Fluid Dynamics at HZDR is recruiting a PhD student (f/m/d) for research on dynamic modeling and experimental analysis of supercritical CO2 Brayton cycles in waste heat recovery. The project sits at the intersection of chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, thermodynamics, process engineering, and process control, with a strong focus on energy efficiency and flexible energy systems.

Research topics include: characterization of dynamic load profiles, literature review of sCO2 cycle operation, experimental studies using the CARBOSOLA test facility, development of a dynamic cycle model, simulation and optimization of operating behavior, techno-economic analysis of control strategies, and recommendations for modular sCO2 cycle design and deployment.

Eligibility: applicants should hold a Master’s or Diploma degree in Process Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. Strong knowledge of thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, process engineering, and process control theory is expected. The post also asks for willingness to work on numerical and experimental tasks, strong teamwork and communication skills, motivation for independent research, excellent English, and programming skills such as MATLAB, SIMULINK, Python, or Dymola/Modelica.

Funding: the position is financed and offered as a full PhD promotion for 3 years. Salary and benefits follow the German public-sector collective agreement (TVöD-Bund), with possible classification up to EG 13 depending on qualifications, plus paid leave, pension scheme, flexible working, and other employee benefits.

Location: Dresden, Germany.

Application: submit a motivation letter, CV, certificates/diplomas, and transcripts through the online application system. The deadline is 2026-11-06.
