About this position

PhD opportunity at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), Institute of Fluid Dynamics, in Dresden, Germany.

The project is titled Dynamic Modeling and Experimental Analysis of Supercritical CO2 Brayton Cycles in Waste Heat Recovery. It sits at the intersection of Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, thermodynamics, process engineering, process control, simulation, and techno-economic analysis.

The successful candidate will work on characterizing dynamic load profiles, reviewing the state of the art in dynamic sCO2 cycle operation, designing and running experiments on the CARBOSOLA test facility, developing a dynamic model of an sCO2 Brayton cycle, and simulating/optimizing flexible energy systems with control strategies. The role also includes techno-economic assessment and scientific communication through conference papers and journal publications.

Eligibility: applicants should hold a Master’s degree or Diplom in Process Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. Strong knowledge of thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, process technology, and process control is expected, along with good programming skills (MATLAB, SIMULINK, Python, Dymola/Modelica, or similar). Excellent English and the ability to work independently in an interdisciplinary, international team are required.

Funding: the position is financed and offered as a full PhD with salary and social benefits under TVöD-Bund; depending on qualifications, classification may be up to pay grade 13, plus holiday leave, pension scheme, and additional employee benefits.

Deadline: 06 November 2026. Starting date: 01 January 2027. Apply via the HZDR online application system using the provided application link.
