About this position
Technical University of Munich (TUM) is advertising a Research Associate (m/f/d, full-time) position in the area of thermochemical recycling, with a strong focus on process simulation and energy system modeling.
The project aims to develop innovative process chains for the thermochemical recycling of biogenic residues and otherwise unusable waste. The work centers on process development, simulation, evaluation, and economic assessment of technologies that support the decarbonization of the chemical industry. The successful candidate will join a dedicated research team and be trained in the operation of entrained-flow gasification and pilot plants before independently planning and evaluating simulation studies.
Key research topics include waste-to-olefins process concepts, development and integration of AI-based models, techno-economic analysis (TEA), LCOM sensitivity analyses, and supra-regional energy system modeling and optimization covering transformation pathways, hydrogen ramp-up, part-load behavior, and flexibilization. The role also includes scientific publishing, conference presentations, and collaboration on teaching and student supervision.
Eligible backgrounds include an above-average university degree in energy engineering, process engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field. Experience or sound knowledge in process and/or system modeling is desirable. The post emphasizes independent, structured, solution-oriented work, responsibility, diligence, creativity, teamwork, and strong communication skills.
This is a full-time E13 TV-L position, limited under the German academic fixed-term framework (WissZeitVG), and it is explicitly intended for academic qualification leading to a doctorate. The application deadline is 2026-11-12.
To apply, send a single PDF by email with a cover letter, CV, certificates, and optionally letters of recommendation. Use the subject line Application Thermochemical Recycling – Modeling and email the application to [email protected]. Technical questions can be directed to Lukas Springmann at [email protected].
