About this position

PhD opportunity at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Department of Applied Physics and Science Education, within the Photonics and Semiconductor Nanophysics (PSN) group.

The project focuses on dynamic space–time interfaces for high-speed THz beam control, including frequency conversion, beam steering, anomalous scattering, and nonreciprocal propagation in the sub-THz regime (0.3–1 THz). The research combines electromagnetic design, device development, THz experiments, and modelling of fast spatial/temporal modulation. Possible platforms include MEMS-based architectures and other dynamic modulation mechanisms.

You will work on the full research cycle: concept development, numerical modelling, structure design, fabrication, experimental characterization, and THz system demonstrations. The project aims to demonstrate GHz-rate two-dimensional spatiotemporal beamforming for reconfigurable and nonreciprocal THz communication.

The position is part of SPARK – Spatiotemporal Photonic Technologies, a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network funded by the European Union under Horizon Europe. You will be based at TU/e in Eindhoven, with a 6-month research stay at Université de Namur for theoretical modelling and a 3-month stay at TNO for THz mode (de)multiplexing and system-level characterization.

Funding and employment: full-time PhD employment for four years, with salary in TU/e scale P (€3,204–€4,051 gross/month), plus holiday allowance, year-end bonus, pension, leave, training, and other employment benefits.

Eligibility highlights: master’s degree in Applied Physics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optics/Photonics, Microsystems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field; strong background in electromagnetics/wave physics/microwave-THz engineering/photonics; experience with Python, MATLAB, COMSOL, CST, Ansys, or similar tools is valuable; strong English communication skills required. MSCA mobility and doctoral-degree rules apply.

Application: apply online through the TU/e portal. Submit a cover letter, CV with publications and references, transcripts, and a publication or MSc thesis summary. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

What's required

A master's degree in Applied Physics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optics/Photonics, Microsystems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field is required. Applicants should have a strong foundation in electromagnetics, wave physics, microwave/THz engineering, and/or photonics, plus experience with numerical modelling or scientific programming (e.g. Python, MATLAB, COMSOL, CST, Ansys). Interest or experience in dynamic electromagnetic systems, THz technology, metasurfaces, MEMS, RF/microwave systems, or experimental wave characterization is preferred. Strong written and spoken English skills are required. MSCA eligibility applies: the candidate must not already hold a doctoral degree and must satisfy the mobility rule for the Netherlands.

How to apply

Apply online via the TU/e application button. Submit a cover letter, CV with publications and 2–3 references, bachelor’s and master’s transcripts, and a copy of your most significant publication and/or a one-page MSc thesis description. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and email/postal applications will not be processed.
