About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of East Anglia in the School of Environmental Sciences on Earth’s carbon cycle, CO2 polyisotopologues, and atmospheric isotope measurements.

This project investigates whether rare isotopic species of atmospheric CO2 can provide new quantitative constraints on ecosystem productivity and carbon cycling from local to global scales. The work builds on the UKRI NERC POLYGRAM project and uses existing and newly collected datasets from Weybourne Atmospheric Observatory, Alice Holt Forest Research Station, Atlantic ship transects, and global atmospheric monitoring networks.

Research topics include triple-oxygen isotopes (16O, 17O, 18O), stable carbon isotopes (12C, 13C), atmospheric chemistry, climate science, geochemistry, environmental chemistry, environmental physics, meteorology, and physical geography. The student will analyse seasonal and interannual variability, quantify ecosystem-scale isotope variations, and evaluate isotope gradients as indicators of global primary productivity.

Training is provided through a collaborative team at UEA’s Centre for Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences and Utrecht University’s Institute for Marine and Atmospheric research. The project includes training in laser-spectroscopic measurements, statistical analysis, environmental time-series modelling, scientific communication, field measurements, and a research visit to Utrecht.

Eligibility highlights: applicants need at least a UK-equivalent 2:1 bachelor’s degree and must meet the English language requirement (IELTS 6.5 overall, 6.0 in each category). The advert describes the project as a competition-funded PhD and is open to students worldwide.

Start date: 1 October 2027. Location: Norwich, United Kingdom.
