About this position
University of Vienna is advertising a predoctoral / PhD-level position in atmospheric aerosol physics within the Vienna Network for Atmospheric Research (VINAR) at the Faculty of Physics. The project is embedded in the Aerosol Physics and Environmental Physics (AEP) Group around Professor Bernadett Weinzierl and focuses on the characterization of atmospheric aerosol at the University of Vienna Aerosols Observatory and comparison with measurements from the Sonnblick Observatory in Austria.
The research combines experimental aerosol physics, in-situ measurements, laboratory and field work, and data analysis of microphysical and optical properties of atmospheric aerosols. The position involves operating and characterizing ACTRIS-related instrumentation such as an Aethalometer, Nephelometer, and Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS), as well as processing and interpreting aerosol data from an urban background site in Vienna and a remote high-altitude site at 3100 m. The work also includes collaboration with GeoSphere Austria and the Department of Meteorology and Geophysics at the University of Vienna, including FLEXPART modelling.
This is a 4-year paid predoctoral employment with a gross salary of EUR 3,776.10 per month on a full-time basis (14x per year), subject to experience crediting. The role includes research, teaching, administration, outreach, conference presentations, and work toward a dissertation. The position is initially limited to 1.5 years and can be extended automatically to 4 years if not terminated in the first 12 months.
Eligibility highlights: a Master's degree (or equivalent) in physics, atmospheric sciences, aerosol chemistry, meteorology, or a related field; strong practical/technical skills; excellent English (C1 or higher); Python/programming experience for data analysis; willingness to work on site in Vienna and travel for measurement campaigns; teamwork and communication skills; and a Class B driving license. A Bachelor's degree may be considered in exceptional cases, preferably with honors.
Application deadline: 24 October 2026. Applicants should prepare a scientific CV, a summary of academic and research achievements, a short statement of future research interests, and degree certificates, then apply via the University of Vienna job portal.
