About this position
Wageningen University & Research is advertising a fully funded PhD on the economics of native species production and rural development in the Cerrado. The project sits within the research theme agricultural economics, rural development, biodiversity conservation, sustainable land use, and combines household/farm surveys, geospatial datasets, and advanced econometric methods to study how native Cerrado species can support biodiversity and local livelihoods.
The research is part of the project “Leveraging biodiversity for reshaping agricultural production in the Brazilian Cerrado”. It focuses on how native species such as macaúba, buriti and pequi are produced, managed and commercialized by smallholder farmers in the MATOPIBA region, and how production diversity, sustainable practices, and market configurations may affect food security and biodiversity outcomes. The PhD candidate will design and implement large-scale surveys, analyze survey and spatial data, conduct workshops and focus groups, write papers, and present findings at international conferences.
The position is based at the Forest and Nature Conservation Policy Group (FNP) at Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands. Supervision is by Jorge Sellare and Verina Ingram. The post highlights fieldwork in Brazil, collaboration with partners in Brazil and the Netherlands, and a strong quantitative profile. Portuguese at C1 level is required, and English at C1 level is expected. GIS and spatial analysis are an advantage.
Funding includes a fully funded PhD contract, a tailored course programme, and a salary starting at €3,204/month in year one and rising to €4,051/month in year four. The contract is initially for 18 months and may be extended for the project duration. Applications close on 2026-10-28.
