About this position

PhD position at the University of Amsterdam in the CERRADO Project (Conservation and Ecological Restoration for Resilient Agriculture and Development Outcomes), focused on environmental justice, agrarian justice, and sociobioeconomies in Brazil’s Cerrado, especially the MATOPIBA region.

The project examines how agricultural development and biodiversity conservation can be better balanced amid agribusiness expansion, deforestation, land conflicts, and climate change. The PhD research will contribute to the assessment of the sociobiodiversity economy in MATOPIBA, including small-scale farming, agroforestry, and sustainable extraction, and will also conduct in-depth socioeconomic and governance analyses of two cases in southern Maranhão.

You will work with researchers, practitioners, grassroots organizations, and local stakeholders in a highly interdisciplinary and international environment. The role includes thesis completion, three article manuscripts, presentations at workshops and conferences, participation in ARTES PhD training, co-teaching at BA level, support for project activities, co-supervision of Master’s theses, and knowledge dissemination.

Eligibility highlights include a completed Master’s degree in Social Sciences or Environmental Sciences, strong qualitative research skills, knowledge of environmental and agrarian justice, research experience with rural communities in Brazil, excellent Portuguese and English, and willingness to undertake extended fieldwork in remote areas.

Funding includes a 48-month employment contract, salary from €3,204 to €4,051 per month (scale P), plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus. PhD candidates also receive a tuition fee waiver and financial support for research and academic events.

Apply online by 29 October 2026. Prepare a CV, motivation letter, two references, and one academic writing sample. The first interview round is planned for the second half of November.
