About this position
PhD position at the University of Amsterdam on Groundwater Care and the Politics of Transformation, focused on India and grounded in political ecology, development studies, environmental humanities, human geography, anthropology, and hydrogeology.
The project examines how individuals and communities in India care for, protect, rejuvenate, and recharge the groundwater they rely on for irrigating crops. It is part of the ERC Advanced Grant project Aquiverse, which studies groundwater care as a way to rethink governance and transformation. The research combines ethnographic description, institutional and hydrogeological documentation, and historical-political ecological analysis of groundwater depletion, agrarian change, and water politics.
You should have a research master’s degree in human geography, development studies, anthropology, or a closely related field. The post seeks applicants with experience in ethnographic methods, interest in agrarian India, willingness to work in remote rural areas, strong academic writing in English, and the ability to communicate in Hindi; additional Indian language skills are preferred. Familiarity with hydrogeology and openness to quantitative work are also valued.
This is a salaried PhD employment contract for 38 hours per week, up to four years, with a possible extension of up to three years. Salary ranges from €3,204 to €4,051 gross per month, plus holiday allowance, year-end bonus, pension, and other benefits. The application deadline is 2 November 2026.
Apply with a single PDF including a motivation letter, CV, writing sample, and contact details for two academic references. Contact Prof. Margreet Zwarteveen at [email protected] for questions.
