About this position
Leiden University is recruiting a PhD candidate for the research project Entangled with Seaweed, focusing on the economization of seaweed and blue economy strategies in South Africa. The project examines how seaweed-related development affects coastal communities, especially in contexts shaped by colonial and apartheid legacies and unequal access to coastal areas.
The PhD researcher will be based at the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology, Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Leiden University, and will work in a team with project partners in South Africa. The research includes developing a proposal, conducting 12 months of ethnographic fieldwork in South Africa, document and policy analysis, participant observation, interviews, and participatory visual storytelling methods.
This is a funded PhD employment position, not a scholarship. The contract is for 38 hours per week, initially for one year with the possibility of extension for three additional years after a positive evaluation. The salary is €3204–€4051 gross per month, with holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus, pension, commuting reimbursement, and other employment benefits.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Anthropology, Sociology, Environmental Humanities, or a related social science/humanities field. Strong qualitative and ethnographic research skills are required, together with excellent English and good organisational and communication skills. Knowledge of a South African official language is an advantage.
The project is linked to Leiden University, Stellenbosch University, the University of Edinburgh, and the Scottish Association for Marine Science. Supervision is shared by Leiden University and Stellenbosch University. The application deadline is 7 November 2026, and interviews are planned for late November and early December 2026.
