About this position

Uppsala University is advertising a PhD student in Evolutionary and Ecological Genetics at the Department of Ecology and Genetics in Sweden. The project sits within the Animal Ecology research program and focuses on a major question in evolutionary biology: whether evolution is repeatable and whether the same genes contribute to repeated phenotypic adaptations.

The PhD project will use a large-scale Evolve-and-Resequence experiment in the seed beetle Callosobruchus maculatus to study local adaptation, determinism versus chance in evolution, and the genetic basis of ecological niche evolution. The work combines experimental biology and especially bioinformatic analysis, using extensive phenotypic, RNA-seq, and DNA pool-seq data, plus comparative genomics opportunities with additional beetle strains and related species.

Research infrastructure includes access to national supercomputing resources (NAISS), SciLifeLab sequencing and molecular platforms, a Climate Lab with controlled chambers and greenhouses, a molecular lab, and animal rearing facilities. The department is described as an international environment with strong links across biology departments at Uppsala University.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in Evolutionary Biology, Ecology, Bioinformatics, or a related field; or equivalent higher-education credits/experience. Applicants should have programming and scripting experience, a solid grasp of ecology and evolutionary biology/genetics, strong English skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Helpful extras include quantitative genetics/population genomics statistics, bioinformatic pipelines on servers/clusters, and experimental evolution experience.

Funding: full-time temporary PhD employment for 4 years, with possible extension for teaching duties up to 20% of full-time employment. Salary follows the doctoral student salary scale.

Application: submit a cover letter, CV, education summary, degree documents, transcripts, master’s thesis, references, and publications through Uppsala University’s recruitment system. Deadline: 1 November 2026.
