About this position
Postgraduate research project at the University of Southampton: PhD in Expanding the optical spectrum of hollow-core fibres to the quantum realm.
This project focuses on optics, hollow-core fibres, photonic fibre design, and the extension of low-loss transmission into the UV-visible range for applications in quantum technology, gas sensing, and industrial machining. You will work with the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC), a major UK optics research group, and gain hands-on experience in optical fibre design and fabrication, experimental testing, fibre characterisation, and practical photonics skills.
The project is competition funded and is aimed at students with a STEM background and an interest in optics or materials science. A 2:1 UK honours degree is required. Prior experience with photonics or optical fibres is helpful but not essential, as full training will be provided.
Closing date: 31 July 2027.
Applicants should review the project page, check the full entry requirements, and apply through the University of Southampton postgraduate research application route before the deadline.
