About this position
PhD opportunity at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Belgium in experimental corrosion science, machine learning, and additive-manufactured metal alloys.
The DurAMat Project is seeking a motivated doctoral candidate to join research supervised by Prof. Iris De Graeve and Prof. Reynier Revilla. The project combines materials science, corrosion science, additive manufacturing, metal alloys, and machine learning to study corrosion behaviour and generate experimental data that can support predictive models.
Research focus: designing and conducting experimental corrosion studies on additively manufactured metal alloys; identifying and quantifying corrosion descriptors and material-performance indicators; generating, processing, and analysing experimental datasets; and contributing to the development and refinement of machine-learning algorithms for corrosion prediction.
Ideal candidate profile: applicants should hold a Master’s degree that grants access to doctoral studies in a relevant field such as Materials Science, Metallurgy, Chemistry, Physics, Computational Materials Modelling, or Artificial Intelligence applied to Materials Science. A strong interest in experimental work, corrosion testing, materials characterisation, data analysis, and/or machine learning is expected. Experience with additive manufacturing, programming, or AI-based modelling is an advantage.
Eligibility note: candidates must meet the MSCA Doctoral Network mobility rule, meaning they should not have resided or carried out their main activity in Belgium for more than 12 months during the 36 months immediately before recruitment.
Application: send an academic CV and a one-page motivation letter to [email protected]. The deadline is 1 November 2026, and the expected start date is as soon as possible, no later than January 2027.
