About this position
PhD opportunity in experimental physics at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Quantum Metrology and Laser Applications (QMLA) group / LaserLaB Amsterdam, within the Molecular Ions group led by Dr. Max Beyer. The project is part of the NWO Vidi project SAMURAI and focuses on fundamental research on H2+, antimatter molecules, quantum mechanics, atomic, molecular and optical physics, lasers, extreme-ultraviolet lasers, millimetre waves, and magnetic fields.
You will study collisions one quantum state at a time, use tunable extreme-ultraviolet lasers to excite H2, image fragments with velocity-map imaging, aim for the first spectroscopic observation of excited electronic states of H2+, and work toward the first measurement of radiative association between a cold proton and a cold hydrogen atom. The project combines experiment and theory, including multichannel quantum-defect theory and scattering calculations.
Eligibility highlights: an MSc degree (or near completion) in physics, physical chemistry, or a related field; interest in lasers, electronics, and quantum mechanics; good English; and a curious, hands-on, collaborative mindset. The position offers a PhD salary of €3,204 to €4,051 gross per month, at least 0.8 FTE, with an initial 1-year contract and possible extension.
Apply with a CV, cover letter, transcripts, MSc thesis or draft, diplomas, and two references. Applications are considered until the position is filled. Contact [email protected] for questions. More information is available via the VU vacancy page and the Molecular Ions project website.
