About this position
PhD opportunity at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Smart Optical Networks Lab (SONL) within the Electro-Optics Communication (ECO) group. The project focuses on photonic integrated switches, WDM switches, optical interconnects, and AI compute clusters, with an emphasis on ultra-fast, energy-efficient, low-latency, and highly scalable network architectures for next-generation artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The PhD researcher will investigate disruptive network architectures for AI training clusters, define system specifications, design and simulate photonic switch architectures, fabricate and test photonic integrated devices, develop optoelectronic interfaces and fast control, and help build a small-scale lab testbed to demonstrate optical switching for AI compute networks. The work is embedded in a national project with industrial collaboration.
Eligibility: MSc in Electrical Engineering or Applied Physics; strong background in optical fiber communications and/or photonic devices and circuits; familiarity with photonic integration technologies, simulation tools, FPGA programming, and laboratory measurement equipment; strong teamwork and communication skills; English proficiency; and readiness to start as soon as possible.

Salary follows Dutch university scale P, with gross monthly pay from €3,204 to €4,051, plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus. What's required
