About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of East Anglia in functional genomics, evolutionary biology, bioinformatics, and genetic engineering.

This project, supervised by Dr Karl Grieshop in the School of Biological Sciences, investigates sexually antagonistic selection in Drosophila melanogaster. The aim is to move from identifying sexually antagonistic genes to understanding what makes them special, how they affect fitness and life-history traits, and the molecular mechanisms underlying sexual conflict and its resolution.

You will work with bioinformatics, genome engineering, and sequencing technologies to identify consistent sexually antagonistic loci across studies, validate their effects using CRISPR-Cas9 allele swaps, and probe mechanisms such as gene regulation and alternative splicing. The project also connects to broader themes in conservation, pest management, aging, and human health.

The studentship is offered through the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Programme (NRPDTP) and is fully funded for 4 years. Funding includes tuition fees, an annual stipend, and a Research Training Support Grant. The programme also includes a three-month professional internship placement (PIPS) and interdisciplinary training opportunities across the Norwich Research Park.

This opportunity is open to students worldwide. Eligibility information and the application process are available on the NRPDTP website. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th February 2027.

Funding details

What's required

Applicants should be interested in evolutionary biology, functional genomics, bioinformatics, molecular genetics, and genome engineering. The project involves cutting-edge bioinformatics, CRISPR-Cas9 allele swaps in fruit flies, and sequencing technologies, so relevant analytical and laboratory skills are advantageous. The NRPDTP studentship is open to students worldwide; eligibility details and application instructions are provided on the programme website.

How to apply

Visit the NRPDTP website for eligibility details and application instructions. Use the bespoke Personal and Research statement templates required by the programme. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed on 2–4 February 2027.
