About this position
PhD opportunity at Durham University in AI protein design, structural biology, plant immunity, and bioinformatics.
This fully funded four-year Gatsby Sainsbury PhD project in the Department of Biosciences and the Centre for Programmable Biological Matter (CPBM) aims to design synthetic plant immune receptors from first principles. The project combines generative protein design (including RFdiffusion, ProteinMPNN, and BindCraft), structural bioinformatics, structural biology, and plant functional assays to build receptors that recognize conserved pathogen effector folds.
You will work on two connected themes: mapping pathogen effector fold space across bacterial, fungal, oomycete, and other plant pathogens; and designing de novo receptor modules and synthetic receptor architectures that can be expressed, purified, structurally characterized, and tested in planta. Experimental work includes X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM, biophysical characterization, plant transient expression, calcium reporter assays, and quantitative gene expression analysis.
Supervision is by Dr Adam Bentham and Prof M Knight at Durham University. The lab sits within a collaborative network including the John Innes Centre, The Sainsbury Laboratory, and the University of Washington. Applicants from computational, physical, and biological backgrounds are welcome, especially those with strengths in computational biology, bioinformatics, machine learning, biophysics, structural biology, biochemistry, or plant science.
Funding is strong: the studentship covers a stipend, lab expenses, books/conferences/travel, and tuition/college fees. The deadline is 27 November 2026. Apply by emailing the supervisor with a CV, one-page cover letter, and transcript.

What's required
Applicants should have a strong foundation in one relevant area and willingness to develop across others. Suitable backgrounds include computational biology, bioinformatics, machine learning, biophysics, structural biology, biochemistry, and plant science. The project welcomes applicants from computational, physical, and biological backgrounds. Experience or interest in generative protein design, structure prediction, structural bioinformatics, recombinant protein expression and purification, X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM, biophysical characterisation, plant transient expression, calcium reporters, and quantitative gene expression analysis would be advantageous.
How to apply
Email Adam Bentham with a CV, a covering letter of no more than one page, and a transcript of your results to date. Applications are submitted directly to the supervisor, who will nominate one candidate for the Gatsby panel. The selected candidate then prepares a short research proposal with supervisor input before the January interview.
