About this position
PhD opportunity at Erasmus MC for a project on genetic modifiers in rare kidney disease. The research sits at the interface of genetics, clinical medicine, bioinformatics, and fundamental laboratory research.
You will study why patients with the same hereditary cystic kidney disease mutation can have very different disease trajectories, including early kidney failure versus stable kidney function later in life. The project uses an international cohort of sibling pairs with discordant outcomes, whole-genome sequencing, validation in independent patient cohorts, and functional studies in patient-derived kidney organoids.
Day-to-day work includes collection and analysis of clinical and genetic data, bioinformatics analyses, laboratory experiments, and presentation of findings. You will collaborate with nephrologists, clinical geneticists, biologists, pathologists, and other physician-scientists in a European consortium.
Supervision is provided by Dr Mahdi Salih and Prof. Ewout Hoorn. The position offers intensive supervision, courses, international conferences, collaboration with leading research groups, and publication opportunities in international journals.
Position: PhD researcher / PhD candidate. Institution: Erasmus MC. Deadline: 2026-09-01. Location: Netherlands.
