Tilburg University’s Law School is offering a fully funded PhD position in Governance and Legal History of Water Quality, situated within the Department of Public Law and Governance. The project focuses on investigating historical water governance practices in early modern cities of the Rhine Delta and comparing these with contemporary water management policies. The research aims to understand how past civic governance—by guilds, neighbourhoods, and urban officials—can inform modern urban water governance. The candidate will conduct archival research, interviews, and literature reviews, and will engage with both historical and current experts in water governance.

The position is full-time (40 hours/week) for four years, starting 1 September 2026, with an initial 18-month contract and possible extension. Supervision is provided by Dr. Merlijn van Hulst (public administration) and Dr. Marco in 't Veld (legal history), both at Tilburg University. The candidate will dedicate 80% of their time to research and 20% to teaching and student supervision, contributing to a vibrant academic community. Applicants must have a master’s degree in law, public administration, or history (or be completing one by September 2026), with high proficiency in English and Dutch (C2 level). Strong research, conceptual, and organizational skills are essential, as is the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Experience with archival research is advantageous, and an interest in teaching is expected. International candidates must meet the Dutch IND income standard for eligibility.

The position offers a competitive salary (€3,059–€3,881/month), 8% holiday pay, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, over 8 weeks of vacation, hybrid work options, commuting reimbursement, pension scheme (ABP), relocation support, and possible 30/20/10% ruling for international hires.
