About this position

PhD position (36 months) at Université de Montpellier, France, on Governing the dilemmas of transition public policies. The project is part of KIPPT 2 (Key Initiative on Public Policies of Transition), a programme led by Laura Michel (CEPEL, UMR 5112) and funded by France 2030.

The doctoral research will examine how different transition public policies interact, create synergies, or come into tension, and how social and political actors identify, formalise, prioritise, and arbitrate those tensions from design to implementation. Possible empirical areas include energy, biodiversity, food, water, and land-use planning. The thesis aims to contribute to research on nexus approaches, governance, territorial and land issues, and power relations.

The candidate will be hosted in the laboratory of the thesis supervisor and affiliated with a doctoral school at Université de Montpellier. The project offers regular scientific activities, doctoral training support, and opportunities for international scientific collaboration. The thesis will be co-supervised by a supervisor from Montpellier I-SITE (Université de Montpellier or partner organisation) and a member of the KIPPT steering committee.

Eligibility highlights: Master degree or equivalent in Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Law, Geography, or Anthropology; strong background in social sciences and public policy analysis; knowledge of ecological transition and governance; strong writing/oral communication skills; and good scientific English.
