The PhD is split between Manchester and Peking: the first and fourth years are at Manchester, where the student will use experimental techniques to quantify heteroaggregation and develop modelling approaches; the second and third years are at Peking University, where advanced experimental methods and single-cell-scale investigations will be carried out.

Eligibility highlights include a relevant 2:1 honours degree or equivalent plus a relevant master's degree for Manchester entry, or a master's-level certificate at merit/distinction for Peking entry. English language proficiency is required, typically IELTS 6.5 overall with minimum sub-scores as stated. Applicants must also be willing to travel between the two partner institutions and meet the relevant postgraduate researcher person specification.

Funding is competition-based and includes fee waivers at both universities. Manchester-based students receive the UKRI minimum stipend for 2026/27, a flight allowance for travel to Peking, and up to £5000 per year in research training grant support. Students based in Peking are expected to secure China Link Scholarship funding for stipend support, with accommodation guaranteed for successful CLS applicants.
