About this position

PhD position available at the University of Bern in the Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, within the newly founded high-pressure chemistry group headed by Dr. Tomasz Poreba and the chemical crystallography group headed by PD Dr. Simon Grabowsky.

The project focuses on high-pressure chemistry, high-pressure crystallography, physical chemistry, and the structure, performance, and chemistry of new barocaloric materials. The research will involve material synthesis, high-pressure differential scanning calorimetry, high-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction, in-house equipment, and synchrotron experiments.

Applicants should have a university Master’s degree or equivalent in the natural sciences, preferably chemistry or physics. Experience with high-pressure technology, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray structure determination is beneficial. Strong English communication skills, technical microscope skills, and proficiency with computer software are expected.

The position starts on 01.09.2026 or by arrangement, lasts 4 years, and is a full-time research appointment with some teaching contributions. Salary follows the recommendations of the Swiss National Science Foundation for doctoral students.

To apply, submit a cover letter describing your research and technical background, a copy of your MSc certificate or equivalent, a CV including publications, and the names of two referees. Send the documents as a single PDF by mail or e-mail to the contact address in the job ad.
