About this position
PhD position at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in high-resolution transmission electron imaging in scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
The project aims to democratize transmission electron imaging by developing a compact, affordable projection system that can bring techniques such as electron diffraction, low-energy STEM, and phase-contrast imaging to conventional SEM platforms.
You will work at the intersection of electron optics, microscopy instrumentation, MEMS, imaging physics, and numerical modelling, in close collaboration with industrial partner Delmic. The research includes analytical and numerical modelling, custom Python-based tools, large-scale simulations, design and fabrication of miniaturized electron-optical components, electronics and vacuum hardware development, and experimental validation inside an SEM.
The position is hosted in the Gheidari Lab, part of the Microscopy Instrumentation and Techniques (MInT) Group within the Department of Imaging Physics at TU Delft.
Eligibility highlights: MSc in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field; strong skills in simulation, modelling, and data analysis; solid background in physics, optics, electron optics, MEMS, experimental physics, and microscopy systems; good English communication skills; interest in coaching BSc/MSc students.
Funding and employment: 4-year PhD employment, salary €3059–€3881 gross/month depending on year, plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also mentions health insurance discounts and work costs contribution.
Application deadline: 24 August 2026. Apply online with a motivation letter, CV, and degree/transcript copies. Email applications are not accepted.
Funding details
Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
