About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, United Kingdom: From brain to germline: how perception affects genetic inheritance (IMMLER_UEA_ARIES27).

This competition-funded PhD project explores how perceived temperature changes, not only actual heat stress, can influence the germline and shape transgenerational inheritance in zebrafish. The project sits at the intersection of biology, neuroscience, environmental science, genomics, bioinformatics, reproductive biology, developmental biology, and evolutionary biology.

Research questions include whether temperature-sensing neurons can alter small RNAs and transposable element activity in the germline, whether these changes are inherited by offspring, and whether they improve or reduce fitness under later heat stress. The work combines zebrafish behavioural conditioning, phenotypic measurements, multigenerational crosses, fitness assays, transcriptome sequencing, small-RNA and molecular assays, and bioinformatic analysis.

Training includes animal husbandry, experimental design, molecular biology, quantitative PCR, sequencing-based methods, statistical analysis, bioinformatics, scientific writing, presentation, and career development. The project is suitable for a motivated student with interests in genetics, evolutionary biology, molecular biology, ecology, or related biological sciences.

Eligibility: at least UK equivalent Bachelors (Honours) 2:1. English language requirement: IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each category. Prior experience with model organisms, molecular techniques, quantitative analysis, bioinformatics, or programming is desirable but not essential.

Funding: competition funded PhD project for students worldwide.

Location: Norwich, United Kingdom.

Start date: 1 October 2027.
