About this position

Doctoral Researcher opportunity at Tampere University, Finland

The Aerosol and Cloud Particle Optics group in the Aerosol Physics Laboratory at Tampere University is recruiting a Doctoral Researcher for the ERC-funded CRYSTAL project. The project focuses on ice crystal surface roughness, atmospheric optics, surface scattering, BRDF, polarization-resolved optical measurements, and computational light-scattering analysis.

You will investigate how nano- and microscale roughness affects the way atmospheric ice crystals scatter sunlight, with relevance to cirrus-cloud representation in climate and satellite-observation models. The work combines experimental physics, optics/photonics, precision measurement, surface characterization, programming, and quantitative data analysis. You will help select and prepare representative surface morphologies for nano-printing, assess sample quality, and develop data-processing and quality-control routines.

The project is embedded in Tampere University’s multidisciplinary research environment and involves collaboration with a postdoctoral researcher and international partners. The position offers structured doctoral training, close supervision, and increasing responsibility for experiments, publications, and conference presentations.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in experimental physics, optics, photonics, atmospheric science, or a related field; strong laboratory measurement experience; strong programming/data-analysis skills in Python, MATLAB, or similar tools; excellent English; teamwork skills. Experience with light-scattering, gonioreflectometry, surface metrology, microscopy, nano-fabrication, ice-particle optics, or cloud microphysics is beneficial but not required. Finnish is not required.

Funding and terms: fixed-term doctoral researcher employment for 3.5 years. Typical starting salary is around EUR 3,000 per month under the Finnish University Salary System.

Application window: apply online by 18 October 2026 at 23:59 EET. Submit a CV (TENK format), list of publications, contact details for two referees, and a motivation letter in English as PDF files.
