About this position
PhD opportunity at Aalborg University (AAU Energy), Denmark in in-operando diagnostics of Li-ion and post-Li-ion batteries using acoustic technology.
The project sits in the research group Batteries and the section for Power Electronics Systems Integration and Materials. It focuses on battery ageing, acoustic emissions, ultrasound-based sensing, electrical characterisation, signal processing, and physics-validated modelling for diagnostics. The goal is to build a mechanistic understanding of how degradation mechanisms affect acoustic signals and to develop an acoustic-based diagnostic method for both Li-ion and post-Li-ion chemistries.
You will review the state of the art, design and build an acoustic sensing setup for coin cells, run degradation tests across operating conditions, analyse acoustic and electrical signatures, and develop a model/algorithm targeted to outperform conventional impedance-based estimation. Experimental work is mainly at coin-cell level, with a proof of concept at single-layer pouch-cell level.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold an M.Sc. in electrical engineering, energy engineering, or mechatronics. Experience with battery testing, acoustic/ultrasonic sensing, laboratory instrumentation, and signal processing/data-driven modelling (MATLAB or Python) is an advantage. PBL experience is required, and strong English skills are necessary; Danish is desirable but not mandatory.
Funding and duration: this is a full-time PhD stipend for 3 years, with salary and employment terms under Danish university agreements. The position is open from 15 November 2026 or soon after.
Deadline: 30 October 2026. Apply through Aalborg University’s recruitment system and include your motivation letter, CV, diplomas, and other relevant documents.
