About this position

This PhD project at Aston University investigates the complex interplay between oxysterols, cholesterol metabolism, and myelin maintenance in the central nervous system. Cholesterol is essential for cellular structure and function, particularly as a key component of myelin, which insulates nerve fibres and supports efficient nerve conduction and brain function. When cholesterol is oxidized, it forms oxysterols—bioactive molecules that can influence lipid homeostasis, inflammation, and cell signalling, with both protective and detrimental effects on myelin depending on their structure and concentration.

The research will utilize in vitro cell culture models and advanced mass spectrometry techniques to profile cholesterol and oxysterol pathways. By examining oxysterol levels in the context of neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis, the project aims to elucidate how altered cholesterol metabolism and myelin degeneration contribute to disease progression. The ultimate goal is to advance understanding of oxysterols in myelin biology and inform the development of new therapeutic approaches for demyelinating disorders.

The position is based at Aston University's College of Health and Life Sciences in Birmingham, UK. Applicants should be able to attend campus regularly. The project is open to both Home and Overseas applicants; however, only Home tuition fees are covered, and Overseas students must pay the difference (£17,712 for 2026/7). Candidates must have a strong academic background in a relevant subject, with specific degree requirements outlined below.
